Magic Bus

In India a third of the population live below the poverty line and millions of these are children living in some of the most alarming conditions in the world, many in slum communities. They often have to work from a young age and take care of siblings so their personal development needs are often neglected. Magic Bus focuses on this forgotten development need, enabling children to challenge themselves and discover the strength and qualities existing within.

The Magic Bus programme empowers children and youth, like Sheetal below, to take charge of their own lives so that they can move out and stay out of poverty.

“When I was 4 years old, I was homeless and lost on Mumbai Central Station. I kept moving between orphanages. At 13, I had had enough – I ran away. I was caught and taken back to the home. It felt like jail.

I then came across Magic Bus. My first experience with them was at a camp. It was the first time that someone unknown to us had treated us with so much love and respect. With Magic Bus weekly sessions, I saw how the attitude of the kids around me changed for the better. I learnt a lot there… I learnt to let go, I learnt to say sorry, I learnt to be happy. My confidence increased and I started believing more in myself. I failed my exams once and Magic Bus mentors encouraged me to try again, and the second time I passed! When I turned 18 I applied to Magic Bus for a job and after a round of interviews I got selected. I feel very happy and safe here. My dream has come true I am doing what I always wanted to do. I am here to give my children what I got from Magic Bus mentors when I was on the programme.” Sheetal*, 21 years old.

Since 1999, Magic Bus has worked with approximately 60,000 children living in slums and rural poverty providing them with an outdoor learning programme, which addresses vital developmental needs. Thanks to a new found confidence and self belief, children give up drugs, fight against gender and religious divides, choose to go to school and change the communities around them. By March 2010 Magic Bus estimates it will be reaching approximately 140,000 children and youth across the country.
